joy·ful [joi-fuhl] adjective –
full of joy, as a person or one’s heart; glad; delighted.
The one and only thing that will make you truly joyful is Jesus.
That might sound crazy. Or maybe it sounds simple. And maybe it is a little crazy and a little simple. But it’s the truth. It’s Jesus.
You may be thinking, “But there’s so many other things in life that have to happen; Jesus can’t possibly be the one thing that’ll make me completely joyful.” Or “Nahhh, I’m already joyful. I have the best job, family and friends! What more could I ask for?” Or “Yes, I’m saved. I have Jesus and sure, I’m joyful.” Or lastly, “How could I ever be joyful? Nothing ever goes my way.” It’s easy to think any one of these thoughts when we aren’t completely sure of who Jesus is. I’ve been there, done that. But not anymore. Because something wild happened. I actually got to know Jesus.
And you might ask, “What’s there to know about Jesus anyway?” We all know He’s the Son of God, He’s perfect, and He died for our sins. Yes, that’s all true. But there’s so much more. Even for those of you reading this who have grown up in the church and think you know Jesus – I urge you to really think about this.
While Jesus was being crucified on the cross He said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do”(Luke 23:34). In the midst of the excruciating pain He was enduring, Jesus, our friend and Son of God, pleaded with His Father, to forgive us of our sins. If that doesn’t send a shock-wave through your body or make your heart beat a little faster, I’m not sure what will. Not only did Jesus Christ show His love for us by humbly and willingly giving His life for us, He also felt compelled to ask His Father to forgive us! For Him, dying an incredibly agonizing death on the cross wasn’t enough. He had to advocate for us; just like He always does. He took it one step further.
It’s clear that we see God’s grace and mercy abundantly in our lives. We all need grace and mercy. Although we don’t deserve it. And again (if you haven’t seen His name bolded several times already) the only One who can show us grace and mercy all day, everyday is Jesus. Don’t you want to really get to know the One who can fill your heart with joy? No matter what the circumstance is, we can always be reminded and humbled knowing that Jesus died the death that we deserved. He took our sin and shame on Himself and carried the weight of it all on the cross because He wants to know us. That doesn’t even make sense. Why would He want to know us? Well, that’s the point. His love is unexplainable. It’s crazy. But it’s simple. It’s just Jesus.
Each day, I’m still learning about Him. Through every triumph and every storm, even through the little things that happen, I learn more and more about who Jesus is. One thing I am certain of, is that He is all for me. He’s all in. He’s committed. He’s invested. And He loves me unconditionally. Now, really I can say, “What more could I ask for?”
I could tell you all I want about Jesus, but you need to get to know Him yourself.
Knowing and believing that Jesus Christ is more than enough is what today should be about. And if we are given tomorrow, then, it’s what tomorrow should be about too. Be joyful today in knowing that you have the One who gave His life for you. Spend more time with Him. The closer you grow to Him, the more and more you will understand Him and know Him. And you’ll be able to confidently say, “Take this world and give me Jesus.” All arrows point to Him. Jesus – the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
