Lately I’ve been trying to be completely honest with God. We all know that He is all-knowing, but it speaks volumes to Him when we can come to Him, on our knees, with all our cares. That’s what He wants. If that’s what He wants, then who am I not to even try? So, that’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve been just laying it all out – with no expectations other than knowing a few things for certain. 1) He hears my prayers. 2) I don’t have to be afraid in asking/telling Him anything. 3) He will answer my prayers. 4) Whatever His answer is, it’s the best for me. After all, He is my Savior; He gave me life. Why wouldn’t He want the best for me?
In the process of being completely open and honest I am able to see myself better, too. Digging deep into what’s really in my heart allows me to see who I really am. Where do my desires lie? What do I truly want? Who are my affections set on? Why do I doubt? When does it all become too much? It is because of Jesus Christ that I have life. It is ALL because of Him. But I can’t deny that it is a struggle. When it becomes a major struggle for me to believe His promises, that’s when I STOP. And tell Him.
Lord, this is what I want. These are my desires. I need Your help to see clearly. Right now, I can’t see clearly. Right now, I am so overwhelmed with these wants and desires. Please, help me. I’m waiting for You.
Then, I STOP. And wait. I wait for Him to rescue me. I wait for Him to direct me. I wait for Him to make things clear. Without fail, He does. For some of you, this may sound weird. To even hear that the Lord will answer all your prayers probably sounds outrageous. But it’s true. He does. He always answers, but that doesn’t mean it’s the answer you were expecting or the answer you think is best. Don’t worry about the timing. Keep committing it all to Him, He will make it clear in His time. He is continuously working for you. So as He works for you, keep talking to Him and keep working for Him. Being completely honest with God is the first step to truly believing that it’s about Him, not us.
Yeah, sure, we want all these things that we think would be great for us. STOP. Remember your purpose. Your purpose isn’t to have the “best” life YOU could imagine. Your purpose isn’t to be happy. Your purpose is to become more like Jesus Christ. Your purpose is to give HIM the glory. Along with that purpose, we know HE has THE best for us. It really is all up to us to decide whether we want to walk on the path to HIS best or walk on the path to our best. We just can’t help it though. We can’t help but have certain wants. We can’t help but have certain desires that are so strong. But what we can do is lay it all at His feet. What we can do is say, “This is what I want, but because I am now hidden in You, I want what You want.” Maybe that doesn’t make sense, maybe it does. Just be honest. Ask Him for wisdom. He will freely give it to you. You may screw up. I was screwing up a lot. I was making unwise decisions. But now I know it’s because the Lord was teaching me to consult Him before EVERY decision I make and before EVERY conversation I have. It’s crazy what He’s doing. He wanted more from me than just asking for wisdom at the start of my day. No, He wants me to ask Him for wisdom before everything throughout my day. Every little thing. That’s the thing though. We have to know that every decision we make is important. We have to be walking with Him constantly. Not just for the big decisions, but even for the little ones. Otherwise at the end of the day you may be thinking to yourself, like I do all the time, “Wow, I’m so stupid. Why didn’t I ask God first?!” You’re only deceiving and hurting yourself when you aren’t being real with the Lord.
Let’s look back at the things that we know for certain when bearing it all before Jesus.
He hears my prayers. I know that God is great. I know that He is able, not only to hear my prayer, but to do something about my prayer. I know that God can completely change the situation. I have confidence that God is all-powerful and can make the impossible, possible. Do you believe the Lord is listening to every prayer you have? Do you believe He is listening to the cries of your heart? If you don’t, then maybe you don’t believe how great He is.
I don’t have to be afraid in asking/telling Him anything. God is so gracious. We are free to go before Him and Him anything we want. Again, that doesn’t mean He will always answer the way we want, but He is gracious enough to allow us to come and ask. Are you afraid to tell Him what you really want? Are you certain that He is listening and LOVES to hear what’s on your heart?
“casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7
He will answer my prayers. I know that His answer could be anything, but that’s not going to stop me from talking to Him. Sometimes He says no, sometimes He says wait, or maybe He will answer the way I expected – He knows exactly what I need. Do you believe that God will answer your prayers? Are you ready for whatever His answer will be? Know that when you hear His voice clearly, with an answer, there is no sweeter place to be. He loves you!
Whatever His answer is, it’s the best for me. I can trust that God is sovereign. I can trust that He has always been faithful and always will be faithful. I can trust that He lives in me. So, whatever He wants is what’s best. I can try to concoct what I think is best, but ultimately I know, with confidence, that casting my cares upon Him will allow me to accept His best. Do you believe that He wants the best for you? Think back to His faithfulness in your life. Think back to when He gave His life for you. Of course He wants the best for you. All you have to do is accept it. Accept His best.
Have you ever wondered why it’s so hard for us to be transparent with the Lord? I believe it’s because we doubt one or any of the 4 truths mentioned above. Yes, at times it’s tough to believe these things whole-heartedly. But they are all necessary. Search your heart daily. Believe that Jesus Christ is all for you. STOP. Think about Him. He’s faithful, constant, loving, true and powerful. He fills us and sees us. He knows our every move. All He wants is for us to look at Him – to look at Him and just be with Him. When it comes down to it, what we need to be saying is, “Thank You.”
Let go of you and embrace Him. Don’t try to figure it all out. All your wants and desires. Stop and let them all go. Sure, that’s easier said then done. All you need to do is look at Jesus Christ. Just keep looking. Don’t stop.
