Be A Blessing

And I will make you a great nation,
And I will bless you,
And make your name great;
And so you shall be a blessing;
And I will bless those who bless you,
And the one who curses you I will curse.
And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed

Genesis 12:2-3

The song of the week reminds us that our God is so good! Through the good and the bad, God remains faithful. There is so much joy in knowing how good our God truly is. Genesis 12, shows us the covenant that God made to Abraham thousands of years ago: a promise to make him a great nation, and to bless him, so that he in turn could be a blessing to the world. Today this promise still holds true to followers of Jesus Christ. As spiritual descendants of Abraham (Galatians 3:29), we too are called to be a blessing to the world, because we have been blessed.

When I say we have been blessed, I’m not talking about material blessings like a beautiful house, a great job, a fancy car, etc. I’m referring to the greatest blessing of all: Jesus Christ!! Jesus Christ, Himself, came down to this earth to be a curse for us so that through faith in Him, we may have eternal life (Galatians 3:10-14). Essentially, we all fall short of God’s glory and deserve to die because of our sinful nature, but God, in all His goodness, sent His Son to die for us instead! To me, that sounds like the greatest blessing ever!!!

Now let’s take this great truth and apply it to the verses listed above. God Has blessed us with His Son, and in turn we must go out and be a blessing (vs. 2). This blessing is not meant for us to keep to ourselves. It is our duty as believers, to go out into the world and bless them with the greatest blessing of all: Jesus Christ! Just as God chose Abraham to go out and bless the families of the earth, meaning all the nations, He too has called us (the descendants of Abraham) to go out and be a blessing to the world. God has chosen His children (you and me) to go into all the world and preach the good news. I once heard a great analogy: If I had the cure for cancer and kept it to myself, I would be doing a huge disservice to the hundreds of thousands of people suffering/dying from cancer. Similarly, if you and I have experienced the goodness of God and know that our destiny is secure in Christ, then how can we keep that truth from the millions of people dying every day without knowing Christ as their personal Savior? We too would be doing a disservice to the world and to God by keeping His goodness to ourselves. Even more importantly, we would not be following God’s will for the world. God doesn’t want a single person to die; he wants every single person in the world to be saved, and he trusted us to carry out that will.

This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.  -I Timothy 2:3-5

For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD.  Repent and live! -Ezekiel 18:32

For years I had lived my life thinking that if I went to church and played the part of a “good Christian” then that would be enough to make God happy. For years I was convinced that God was blessing me for all the great things had accomplished, and unfortunately, many Christians (like myself) think that this is enough. I encourage you today to study the Word and ask God to show you who He really is. He is a God that deserves all of our worship and praise. Not just from some people, but from all of creation.

Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day.
Tell of His glory among the nations,
His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.
For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised;
He is to be feared above all gods.

Psalms 96: 2-4

My life has forever been changed because of His goodness, and I no longer want to live for the pleasures of this world, but rather, for the pleasure of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! There is a great sense of responsibility in knowing that God has chosen you and me to be His representatives in this world. With this responsibility comes great joy and blessings. God receives the greatest glory when people accept Him as their personal Savior. His name is the only name that deserves to be praised and glorified, and this can only happen, if we recognize our responsibility and go out and be a blessing to the entire world.
