“And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death.” – Revelations 12:11
For those of you reading this post who feel as if sin has taken control of your life and you have no way out, I encourage you to read the verse above and pray it out loud. Believe the Word of God when it says that we have overcome sin by the blood of the Lamb! Satan is here with a vengeance, to seek and destroy; but your belief in the Lord Jesus Christ will prove to him (and to the world) that through Christ’s death and resurrection Satan has been rendered powerless.
Revelations 12:12 states that the devil knows his time on this earth is short, and because of that he has come with a vengeance. Christians must take this verse very seriously. Satan is here to attack! The video from the song of the week perfectly depicts how Satan can fill us with lies about our appearance, our self worth, our value, etc. He does what he can to attack and make you feel worthless. All of us have faced periods in our lives when we didn’t feel good enough, or thought negatively of ourself for some reason or another. Satan’s goal is to attack with a vengeance.
The verse above reminds us that we will overcome all of those negative feelings that can fill our mind by the precious blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He died to set us free from the bondage of sin. Satan can try to fill our minds with lies, but if we truly believe that Jesus Christ is Lord, then we can declare to the devil that he has no room in our lives.
“Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.” – Hebrews 2:14-15
Jesus’s blood washed us clean, so we know that Satan’s claim that we are unworthy of God’s love is no longer true – but that is only part of the verse’s power. The verse is conjunctive: they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb AND because of the word of their testimony, AND they did not love their life even when faced with death.
The second part, being able to overcome by the word of our testimonies, means that we need to live out what we believe. The word of our testimony is declaring with our mouth that we believe Jesus Christ is Lord, that He rose from the grave, and that He is seated in Heaven. If we really believe that Jesus Christ did in fact save us from eternal hell, then we should be spreading His good news around the world. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, the powerful message of the Gospel can penetrate the lives of many. Christ has entrusted us with the Word and wants us to be courageous in speaking boldly to those around us about our faith. Our life on this earth is temporary and we are to devote everything we have to Him. This world is not our home – we are just passing through. Make your short time in this world effective. Use what God has given you for His glory. He has declared that every tongue, tribe, and nation will worship Him. Let us use our time wisely to see this promise come to fulfillment. Let us do what we can to fill the Earth with His glory.
Finally, if we fix our eyes on Him and the life that is to come, we will be able to fulfill the last part of the verse above: “and they did not love their life even when faced with death.” This is not a state of discontent with our current lives, but rather a state of eagerness for the next. It is an amazing life filled with the constant joy of wholeheartedly doing the Savior’s work while pleasantly anticipating an eternity in the loving presence of our Lord. I feel like this last part of the verse is both the final requirement to overcome the devil, and our amazing reward for doing so. He is so much more than anything this world can offer, and if we truly believe that we have overcome by the blood of the Lamb, then we must declare this to the world.
