Why do You stand afar off, O Lord?
Why do You hide Yourself in times of trouble? – Psalms 10:1
I’m sure most of you reading this post today have asked this question to God. Maybe in response to something someone did to you or in regards to a stressful situation you are facing. If you are asking this question in response to hurt and sorrow in life, know that it is okay! In fact the words of Jesus Christ, were very similar when He was suffering on the cross of Calvary:
“About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” – Matthew 24:46
In Vinay’s post, he mentioned that we serve a God who never leaves us. He is always with us, but why are there times when we feel alone? We ask God and we hear silence. We wait on God and we don’t get answers. I am not sure what the Psalmist was going through when he wrote Psalms 10, but he genuinely wanted to know why God felt so distant at that moment in his life. Where was God’s hand in everything that was going on? He knew that God was very real and still very present, but He did not know why God was hiding His face in times of trouble.
Here in the last few weeks I have been challenged with this very same question from different people in my life. I want to tell you today that it is okay to ask God “why!” In times of trouble, it hurts us when God hides His face from us. It is okay to question why He remains silent in your times of trial. Jesus Christ, in sorrow, asked the very same question! Amidst all of this, we have to believe that His Word is true and that He continues to dwell in us. When we are facing trials, we should fervently search for His hand because He promises to never leave us nor forsake us. During my periods of brokenness and suffering was when I truly experienced my need for a Savior. I don’t know why God never really answers this specific question, but one thing I do know is that He has told us to fix our eyes on Him. To take up our cross and follow Him. When we walk in His steps and walk towards Him, He will guide us and direct our path.
Life is not always fair, but trust that we serve a God who loves us and cares for our every need. He knows our every thought and understands our ways. He loves us and wants to provide for our needs. The things of this world are temporary and our hope is set on things above. I encourage you to search for God’s hand when you face trials and darkness. Don’t give up on Him and know that He will always be by your side. Even when He seems distant or far, trust that He is by your side. He loves you so much that when His only begotten Son cried out to Him, on the cross of Calvary, He remained silent, so that your sins could be forgiven. We serve a God who’s love is incomparable and unfailing. Always seek to pursue Him and to walk in obedience to His words.
