Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 9: 23-24
From childhood, you grow up with dreams and aspirations. I was a weird one to say the least. As early as third grade, my young feminist heart drew inspiration from women like Clara Barton, Amelia Earhart, Louisa May Alcott, and Susan B. Anthony to name a few. I aspired to do amazing and world-changing things like my heroes.
As I grew older, the dream gradually diminished. By the time I hit college, I didn’t think I was going to make history like my heroes, but I still wanted to leave my mark on this world. Even though I am basically just a speck of sand one a huge beach, there is still this selfish part of me that wants to stand out. Do you ever feel like that?
I struggle with that battle all the time. What’s hilarious is that I really have nothing to boast about. At the end of the day, I am completely dependent on God for all my needs. When I am emotionally, spiritually, or physically weak and sucked dry, He is the only One who has the supernatural ability to fill me up. He is the One who restores my soul!
In this culture, we encourage and celebrate independence, hard work, and success. As I have grown older, the opposite seems to have happened! I am more dependent on God for everything. All the blessings that I enjoy are not because of my abilities or gifts. It is purely by His grace!
In return, God does require something of me and you. He wants us to understand and know Him personally! Think of this scenario. In honor of the World Cup, what if you won a meet and greet with world-renowned soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo? You meet and you both hit it off, and before long you’re besties and he’s convincing you to get your eyebrows done together. Now, when your friends and family ask you how you got tickets to the World Cup in Brazil, what do you say? Are you embarrassed? Are you hesitant? Do you try to play it off? NO! You tell them that you are best friends with Ronaldo and that he got you the amazing hook up! You should want to tell anyone who is willing to listen.
Now replace Ronaldo with the way more amazing, all-mighty God! He did way more by giving you the free ticket to heaven and meets you wherever you are. He comforts you with His Holy Spirit. He is the greatest friend, father, advocate, protector, etc. We should want to tell the whole world about Him! Get to know God personally. You’ll learn so much about Him, and in the process you will be changed forever. You are going to take on His characteristics, and that is most-definitely world changing.
