How can we see God as He really is? We all know it’s something we should be doing, but what exactly do we need to do for it to happen? Oftentimes when we wonder about this question, we are pointed to the following verse:
“You will seek Me and find Me [and be able to see me],” says God, “when you seek Me with all your heart.” – Jeremiah 29:13
Catch that? You see, it isn’t a matter of simply wanting to know God better. Actually achieving this goal depends on how badly you want to do so. You have to seek Him with everything in your being, your heart and your emotions.
I’ve come across many people who have wondered what exactly this requires of them, so here are some practical tips on how to seek the Lord to really know Him.
We are going to be focusing our attention on Proverbs 2:1-5.
Each line of this passage includes a SPECIFIC action you can take in seeking God.
Verse 1: “My child, listen to what I say and remember what I command you.”
The first step of seeking God is to accept, listen, treasure and store up His word.
Verse 2: “Listen carefully to wisdom; set your mind on understanding.”
This next step involves submission and teachability – A desire to be taught by God.
Verse 3: “Cry out for wisdom, and beg for understanding.”
You must next develop a passionate prayer life. Earnestly plead with God for understanding. Spend extended time alone with Him. Consider fasting as You seek His face.
Verse 4: “Search for it like silver, and hunt for it like hidden treasure.”
Make your quest for God a priority each day. Determine to meet and experience Him before breakfast, school and your daily duties. Seek Him with the same zeal with which you would search your backyard if you knew a million dollars in gold was buried there.
Verse 5: “Then you will understand respect for the Lord, and you will find that you know God.”
This verse provides us with motivation for a lifetime. If we seek Him with all our heart, we will experience the knowledge of the Holy One. How wonderful is it to know that He longs to reveal Himself to you and to be known by you!
True knowledge of God only comes firsthand. You will discover Him because YOU dug and YOU cried out to Him. Even the best description by someone else about God can’t compare with you knowing Him personally. So what’re you waiting for? Ask Him to reveal Himself to you like never before today!
