Clear Eyes

And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. | Isaiah 58:11

There is a misconception that being a Christian is all about following a bunch of rules. From the outside, it may look like Christians have to talk, dress, and act a certain way. Do Christians ever have fun? Once they surrender their lives to Christ, do they stop living?

Well, I am a disciple of Christ, and whatever “good” you see in the way I live is all due to the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. When He adopted me into His family, I didn’t “lose” my life. I finally gained it!

During my middle school years, I had to wear these blue-rimmed glasses for my near-sightedness. Yes, they were ugly, but I was happy to pick them at the time. After getting hit in the face multiple times by the ball during volleyball games/practice, my mom FINALLY let me switch to contacts. Sure, learning how to put them in was tedious at first, but it was totally worth it.

I still remember sitting in the car on my way to school, just staring super far away and being able to see EVERYTHING! I could see from the definition in the leaves in the trees and blades of grass to the tiniest of wisps in the clouds of the sky. I was no longer impeded by seeing through a set of frames. That’s how it feels to be a follower of Christ!

Before, I was just kind of stumbling through life only able to focus on what was right in front of me, but as soon as I surrendered my life to Jesus I gained new sight! Creation was more beautiful. Music was more enchanting. Memories and conversations became invaluable. Why? I get to see through His eyes, and it’s so incredible! I am reminded of what Jesus said:

I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good Shepherd. The good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. | John 10:9-11

How amazing is that? Jesus didn’t come to ruin our lives. He came to give us LIFE! Not only that, He wants us to experience pleasures forevermore! Christian, you are not a zombie or a boring robot. You are a new creation made for His glory. Does that mean life will be perfect from here on out? Just rainbows and sunshine? No, not at all. Life will throw some really brutal punches, and there will be times in your life that you are figuratively, if not literally, doubled over in pain gasping for air.

Even during the darkest of days, Jesus still illuminated my path. He filled the holes in my heart. Because my hope is in Him and His finished work, I will get up no matter how many times I may fall. Jesus restores, and He will always be faithful to His children. That’s a promise!

  1. I love the glasses to contacts comparison – so true of my walk with the Lord after I finally deciding to start walking…if that makes sense. 🙂
