Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for He has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” | Hebrews 13:5-6
As you read this post, I want you to ponder a specific question: “Are you content?” Before you make your final answer, I want you to realize that being content is not synonymous with being complacent. I think I had this notion for quite some time. If you grow up in America, you know that such words are hardly mentioned in our vocabulary. No! You grow up hearing phrases like, “reaching the stars”, “living the dream”, or even “get rich quick.” What do those even mean?
We grow up in a world where money is the end all, be all. Seriously consider why you get an education. Is it to obtain knowledge? Is it to better yourself as a human being? As soon as you get that coveted degree, you apply for the job to pay off your loans and to make something of yourself in this short life. At the end of the day, we spend money to get money. Maybe that’s a little too simplified and cynical. I would say that you are absolutely correct!
There are so many facets to consider. Life isn’t black and white. If anyone told me that life is only about money, I would strongly disagree! However, I am very familiar with the feeling of having the weight of the world if I didn’t make that specific grade in that specific class because it would determine if I got into the specific graduate program…You get the idea! Well, the thing is that scenario has happened in my life. Multiple times actually!
I really think God allowed this to happen on purpose. If I had succeeded on my own might, then I would never have learned to depend on God as my helper. Your relationship with Jesus really does correlate with your dependence on Him. When you let Him come to the rescue, the world gets to see a glimpse of Jesus! How cool is that?
Money is great and all, but my Jesus is so much greater! The value of money fluctuates on a daily basis, but Jesus is my one and only constant! He will never leave me or forsake me. When the all-mighty God of the universe is on YOUR side, who can possibly oppose you? No one can! Does that mean we have any reason to fear? Nope. We can be confident that the same God who feeds the birds and waters the earth is the same God who is willing to carry you through any situation. Pinky Promise!
With that in mind, you should be content with what God is doing and providing in your life. Believe me. It is a difficult thing to be content depending on your situation, especially if you think that your ideas are better than God’s ideas. Remind yourself that God does not withhold any good thing. He is sovereign and all-knowing. If you can’t be content with your situation, be more than content with who God is and what He is doing!
