We see ads on the television all the time. A product promoted and the benefits of it emphasized. But at the end, in the small fine print, is laid a price. You see, everything in this world comes at a price. But the world will try to trick you. They will avoid all talk of the price. They will give you the hook, line, and sinker, but shy away from the truth of the price. We buy into these lies, totally oblivious to the cost at hand.
I walked into lust and sin, not knowing the brokenness and hurt that was to come. I sought out worldly love wherever I could find it and found myself so unsatisfied and more lost than ever before.
Yes, there is always a cost.
The world will try to buy you and persuade you to fall into its foolishness. But the world will never tell you how much it will cost. Why? Because the world already knows that when you know the cost, you won’t walk down that path.
But Jesus does the very opposite. He comes with the most radical message. A message that turns this world upside down and leaves us at a loss for words. He calls us to this message. Jesus never hides the cost. No, He tells us upfront. He doesn’t shy away from it. He tells us what it will mean to follow Him. And the ride will not be easy. I will have to deny myself in every way. I will be hated, persecuted, and die to self. Death is inevitable. The cost is clear.
Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?” | John 14:25-28
Dang. That’s harsh. And pretty radical. I mean if I was trying to get followers, this would not be my approach. So why doesn’t He just hide the cost? Because Jesus knows the Truth. Because Jesus is the Truth. And He knows that when we truly find Him, the cost doesn’t matter. Because He is worth every ounce of any cost.
Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ | Philippians 3:8
Jesus counted the cost and found us worth it. I pray we may do the same.
