In God We Trust

As many of you know, the Come Awake Team has been on an extended break due to different situations that have come up over the past few months. Despite this, we felt it was necessary to take the time to respond to yesterday’s election results. We know that the decisions made in this country are important and last night’s decision is no exception. But we don’t want to focus on the election or the candidates or the results themselves. What’s important is OUR response, as followers of Christ, to the latest developments in our nation.

Regardless of which side you’re on – whether you’re rejoicing over a political victory or mourning defeat, one thing is of utmost importance, one thing matters: Jesus is King.

If that doesn’t bring a sigh of relief, we’re not sure what will. Gloating over a victory is not becoming. Nor is lamenting a loss. Neither of these responses achieves anything purposeful.

What is purposeful, then? Focusing on the eternal.

Right here.
Right now.

Prior to this election, our responsibility as believers was to be the light in this world, to represent Christ, to love others like Him, to share Him with others. Now that the election has concluded, is not our responsibility the same? For us, nothing has changed. Our King still rules.

The world is reeling with the events of last night, but we mustn’t be given over to the bantering, the bitterness, the boastful arrogance, the sorrow, the hate, the disappointment. Our nation may have a new president, people may have charged emotions regarding this, but our one response in every situation must be this:

joyful rejoicing at the unsurpassable peace and hope we have in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

We possess something that cannot be severed from our souls. We possess that which cannot be ripped from our hearts. We possess a tangible peace that does not shift with current events, elections, or societal implications.

What we have as believers is CHRIST Himself – living in us, working through us. The people we encounter, regardless of their political alignments, should be able to clearly see Him in us as we interact with them.

In this time of chaos and bewilderment, might we step outside the shackles of society, darkness, and politics and step boldly into the realm of the eternal? Might we shift our eyes, our gaze, our focus away from the mere circumstances of our nation and towards the Kingdom opportunities that now present themselves?

Regardless of who rules the nation, our God is our King and He righteously rules our hearts. Regardless of who rules the nation, we must cling to the eternal perspective we have in Christ and seek to fulfill His purposes for us and for our nation, giving Him all the glory and honor.

My Come Awake sister, Priyanka, stated this truth:

“Most of all, we should be joyful in the hope we have. God stands outside of time. And He surely stands outside of politics.”

So what now?

Now, we rejoice and praise Him because despite what is happening in the nation, we are STILL His children, purchased and redeemed by the blood of His Son. And we rejoice in these words, in this promise:

The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all. | Psalm 103:19

Our God is sovereign! This is the truth we stand on. May we stand boldly and confidently upon it. Wavering for no person, no ideology, no political agenda, no societal issue. HE is in control. He was yesterday and He is today. And tomorrow, He will surely remain in control. May we be confident in our Heavenly King as we entrust our earthly ruler into His hands:

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. | 1 Timothy 2:1-6

Be confident. Stand boldly on what you know is true – His word, His promises, His character, His sovereignty, His love. Make use of every opportunity for His Kingdom and glory. Be the light. Keep your eyes on the eternal. Labor in prayer for all people, for the nation, for the world.

THIS is the will of God for us.

***NOTE: We are hoping to return from our break in December. Please keep the Come Awake Team in your prayers as we write, plan, and prepare!
