But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. | 1 Peter 2:9
We choose athletes based on their physical abilities, experts according to their knowledge base, and leaders based on their political prowess. In all of these situations,
We choose the best.
Not the second best. Not the average. The absolute BEST.
The best companies pick the best employees, the best sports teams select the best athletes, and the best universities recruit the best students. We don’t simply choose the best option. We choose the best option that will further our agenda and help us reach our goal.
This begs the question:
Why did God choose US?
None of us are perfect or even close to perfect. None of us are pure-hearted. None of are completely selfless. None of us are “the best” in any way. Sure, some of us are good-hearted, some of us are generally selfless – but none of us are totally good, all of the time.
Christians in particular are hated for being hypocritical, judgmental, arrogant, and unforgiving. How is it possible that God would choose any one of us, much less, all of us?
Here’s how: He chose us knowing our weaknesses. He chose us knowing our imperfectness. He chose us knowing our sinfulness and selfishness and arrogance and pride. He chose us knowing that we are the furthest thing from being “the best.”
He chose us in love for love.
Our weaknesses, our imperfections, and every single one of our damning qualities set the stage for His power and glory to be revealed.
He chose us because He loves us. He chose us so that we could love others in the same way. He chose us so that others, who are also not “the best” would understand that His love is not performance-based. He chose us so that others, who are imperfect and weak and sinful would believe that His love is unconditional. He chose us so that others would see that He called us “out of darkness into his marvelous light.” He chose us so that we could “proclaim the excellencies” of His name.
We are chosen. We are precious.
Not because we’re “the best,” but because we are NOT.
GOD makes us royal, holy, claimed, fathered, desired, loved.
“The Best” chose us.
So let’s live to FULFILL the purpose for which we were chosen by Him. Let’s study His Word and spend time with Him in prayer. Let’s strive to know Him more. Let’s seek to live lives that are above reproach. Let’s walk in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Let’s be pure in thought, in word, in deed.
Let’s proclaim the
e x c e l l e n c i e s
of Him who called us
o u t o f darkness and
i n t o His marvelous light!
For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. | John 1:16
