Hymnist: Charles Wesley | Lyrics
As I’ve been reflecting on the words of this beautiful hymn, a simple thought keeps returning to my mind:
Christ died for me.
Wow. Isn’t that crazy? Yep, that’s crazy. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Messiah, the God-man, the only perfect human who ever lived—He died, and He died for me.
Have you ever thought about what or who you would be willing to die for?
Your family? Your best friend? Maybe your country? Anything or anyone else? Most of us would be reluctant to sacrifice our lives, unless we found some extremely noble or worthwhile cause. Our I’d-be-willing-to-die-for-that lists are probably very short.
Life is valuable. It’s precious. It’s something you don’t want to just throw away. If you’re going to die for something, you want to make sure it’s worth it.
And so how incredible is it that Jesus looked at us and decided that we were worth dying for, that Him laying down His life for us was a good idea. The Bible clearly says Jesus wasn’t forced to die for us; it was a decision He made. He offered up Himself (Hebrews 7:27).
Again, that’s crazy.
