I was reading through 1 Timothy the other day, and I was shook up by one verse in particular within the first few minutes of my venture:
The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. | 1 Timothy 1:5
It was such a simple verse located in an odd place surrounded by warnings against false teaching and focusing on myths, genealogies, and even the old law. But it spoke truth into my life and encouraged me to recognize two things that stifle me from living a life of love that comes from my pure heart, good conscience, and sincere faith. Idols and Complacency.
So I asked myself.
What is a pure heart? A good conscience? A sincere faith?
I immediately realized that a pure heart is not my work. It is God’s. A pure heart is a prepared heart; a prepared heart is a broken one; and a broken heart has but one treasure that satisfies its soul. A broken heart has only the capacity to serve one master, and it is the only Master capable of drawing it out of brokenness. If it followed after two, its brokenness would persist.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also…No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other… | Matthew 6:21,24
What do you treasure? What master do you serve?
I then realized that I so often get comfortable being a little bit broken chasing after things temporary and things eternal. I get caught in my brokenness claiming like Paul “O, Wretched man that I am!” but forgetting that the story does not end in brokenness.
O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! | Romans 7:24-25
It made sense then that the treasure might(would) lead to a good conscience fueled solely by the person of Jesus Christ, the character of God, and the power of the Spirit. A heart beckoned by one eternal treasure powers eternal purpose, discernment, clarity, and victory. My eternal life does not begin in some beautiful golden place beyond imagination. I live a life of eternity right now.
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. | Romans 8:1-2
The sincerity of my faith is solely dependent on believing that Christ is who he says he is and that he did what he said he did. My victorious life is dependent on believing that Jesus is the Son of God. My faith in Him is victory.
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? | 1 John 5:4-5
So set your eyes on Him. Focus on love that is generated from your pure heart, your good conscience, and your sincere faith.
