A Letter to My Students

Dear sweet child,

I wish I could tell you how loved you are. But since I can’t, I’m writing you this letter.

Did you know that there is only one of you? You aren’t here just because. You aren’t here to get rich quick or to be the most “beautiful” person in the world. You definitely aren’t here randomly either. You are here for a greater purpose. I know your circumstances have led you to believe that you are not worth much of anything, but please know that you are worth so much.

Only if you could see what I see when I see you. And just imagine what the One who created you sees! Your Heavenly Father – He created you with special care and attention. He didn’t produce thousands of you on a conveyor belt at a factory. He formed you and knows the very number of hairs on your head. He knows your thoughts before you even think them and knows exactly what is best for you. He loves you. Not the kind of love that your latest boyfriend or girlfriend told you about in that note they wrote to you the other day. He doesn’t need to use cheesy lines to tell you how much He loves you. He proved it to you when He died for you. But you didn’t know this either. I know you’re shocked right now. To think that you are worth someone dying for you is pretty staggering and even unbelievable. But sweet child, believe it. It’s true. This someone who died for you isn’t just anyone – He is God. He defies all logic. All things that make sense and that are normal are thrown out the window when you decide to believe in Him. You may not believe it at first, but you’ll be convinced. Read His Word – the Bible. It’s a manual for this life and the next. You didn’t know that either, that there is a life after this one here. Yes, it’s true. You will live forever. But choose wisely, you’ll either spend an eternity rejoicing or wishing you would’ve chosen differently. Every second here counts towards what’s to come tomorrow.

I know you think it’s cool to be like everyone else. And that there’s only a few things that will lead to your happiness – money, the nicest things and “love,” – but you’ve got it all wrong. You’re surrounded by friends who also don’t know the truth. I hope they read this letter too. Being rich like the celebrities you see on TV, owning the latest Jordan’s and having the cutest girl or best looking guy on your arm will not bring you happiness. Those things won’t fill your life; they will only leave you wanting more. You have to believe that there is something more to this life than all of that. Don’t buy into the lies that you’re not pretty enough or skinny enough. Don’t fall for those who tell you that you can never make it because you’re not smart enough. Don’t ever give up on who you are meant to be. You have to hope for better. You have to know that you are worth something. You have to.

When I think about you, I can’t believe that you’re only twelve years old.  I wonder why you have to face what you face at such a young age without out any support, but then I am quickly reminded that you have the God of this universe watching you, waiting for you, cheering you on, and hoping that you will choose Him. I hope that through every day you are that much closer to believing in and knowing Jesus Christ. I pray that you will have open eyes to the truth. Don’t believe the lies the world is selling you. They say that you have to look a certain way, talk a certain way and act a certain way. But you are made for more. You are made to be different. You are made to come back to the One who created you.

No matter what anyone says about you or even what people expect you to be, you can be different. You can be kind.  You can stand up for people who don’t know how to stand up for themselves. You can give second, third and fourth chances. You can love the best way you know how. You can choose to do all of these things. It’s all your choice. As you grow up here and as you soon enter your teenage years, know that things may not get easier, but keep searching for the only One who can give you a hope that is worth it all.

So I pray. I pray for you because you may not know how to pray for yourself right now. I am in your corner waiting to see what the Lord will do in your life and what moves He will make. When it seems like everyone around you could care less about what is really going on with you, I’m here. But don’t think that I’m doing this because I am something great or special. I love you because Jesus loves you.  I even teach you math because of Him. I love you because of Him. It’s all because of Him. I know you think I’m weird, but that’s okay, because you’re right. You know why I’m weird. I tell you that all the time. I have to live a different life. It may seem strange to you. But I would never change the decision I’ve made to live for someone greater than myself. Remember all the “life lessons” I’ve tried to teach you. Be intentional. Think twice before you speak – what comes out of your mouth is what’s in your heart. Put others before yourself. Work hard; you may not see the benefits now, but you will. Take it a day at a time. Each day is a new start. Most of all, be ready to be changed by the most perfect love there is. Be ready to give your life wholly to someone who gave His life wholly for you. It will be the best decision you will ever make.

Love always,

Your teacher and friend

P.S. Please, please, please, just do your homework.
