For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
the Lord bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does He withhold
from those who walk uprightly. Psalm 84:11
When I read this verse, the song “Open My Hands” by Sarah Groves came to mind. (You should definitely read the lyrics if you have a chance.) When you really think about it, has God ever kept things from you?
No, I’m not asking if He has ever said no to your requests. I am asking if He purposefully decided to deprive you of something. Many of you might be quick to defend and say that God would never deprive His children. For some that might be a hard question to wrestle with especially after going through a very difficult season of life.
I totally understand that. There have been times in my life where I wish God would have withheld the bad things in my life. It wasn’t until after the fact…and years later…that I was able to take a step back and realize that the “bad” thing was still ultimately for my good!
It’s a little ironic to realize that the “good things” that God allows in our lives can be perceived as good or bad depending on the situation. Let’s try to make it simpler. Imagine your least favorite veggie. Maybe it has this weird smell that no amount of oil or spice can cover, or the texture is just bizarre. Bottom line, it tasted disgusting, but you forced it down when mom told you. As “bad” as it was, you knew that in the end it was for your “good.”
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17
This gift giving business that God has been doing is never going to stop, so you may as well sit back and enjoy it. Even if the packaging seems haphazard or the content may seem fragile, never forget that your heavenly Father loves to shower good gifts on His children. Yeah, you will run into times where it feels like the whole world is crumbling, but rest assured that God uses every situation for your ultimate good.
You might not realize the reasoning behind it initially, or you’ll never find out while on this side of heaven. However, don’t overlook the active working of Divine Love. If there was alternative route, He would have placed you on it. Enjoy the good things!
