Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. | 2 Corinthians 3:4-6
One of the things I still grapple with is the glory of God. I have read about it, sang about it, and attended a whole retreat studying and learning about it. Guess what? I am still a complete novice. I think you could EASILY spend a lifetime studying and pondering the glory of God, and STILL not fully comprehend it.
If I could give you one recommendation this week, it would be to read 2 Corinthians 3 in its entirety. When I read it in preparation for this post, it was like I was reading it for the first time. Praise God for His Living and Breathing Word! I am constantly taken aback when I read Scripture because it is truly humbling to realize that there is so much I have yet to learn or understand.
If you swing by the Passion & Pursuit page or YouTube, you can listen to “The Reason I Sing” by Jimmy Needham. I was reading the lyrics, and I was reminded how hard we work to attain our own glory. Day in and day out, we are like mice running through the maze to get the cheese. Well, guess what? That piece of cheese is an unnatural fluorescent yellow, has been sitting out in the open for at least a day and has already been gnawed on by some earlier mice.
The glory we try so desperately to attain is incomparable to the glory of God! You want to know something mind-boggling? His glory shines through us! If you are a child of God, the Spirit of God is residing within you! Check it out:
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. | 2 Corinthians 3:18
How cool is that!? God is literally transforming us through the Holy Spirit into HIS image! Verse 3 actually talks about believers being letters from Christ. Instead of being written in ink, we are written with the Holy Spirit. Now, that sounds like an epic letter. Let’s pass that note around!
I want to reiterate verse 5: Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God. It is right there in black and white. We are not only unable to attain our own glory, but also unable to be self-sufficient. Do you realize what that means? We are COMPLETELY dependent on the Lord!
With all of that in mind, when we try to “shine” in this world, it’s completely futile. I have these glow-in-the-dark star stickers on my bedroom ceiling, and it is nothing compared to the brilliance of the sun which is the only star in our solar system. Don’t try to be a glowing sticker using your own might. Shine even brighter than the sun! Shine with the glory of the SON by depending on Him as Lord of your life!
