What does having a “good day” usually consist of in your life?
Maybe you’ve found some cash in an old coat, or your boss/teacher gives you a compliment on your work ethic… Maybe a friend buys you lunch or you find out you passed a really hard exam. All of these different things are certainly reasons to celebrate, and they will undoubtedly bring about happiness in your life!
But what if our joy didn’t depend on things that happened throughout the day?
“Lord, this is a good day! I might not know enough about it yet to say WHY it’s a good day – but I trust You who made it to lead the way. I will rejoice and be glad in You and all You have in store.” | Unknown
I like this quote so much. In fact, there’s a part of me that wants to frame it up in my room just so that I can read it every morning. You see, knowing Jesus brings about the kind of joy in your life that doesn’t depend on ANYTHING besides Him. I don’t mean “knowing Him” as in, being a regular church attendee and having memorized verses that describe Him. I’m talking about having a relationship with Him – which includes enjoying moments with Him, talking to Him about everything and falling deeper in love with Him every day.
Of course, there are going to be days where something happens and it might make you extra happy… but just for that moment! The kind of joy that you experience at the moment that you pass an exam or find some cash in your pocket is only temporary – you may remember it forever but the true feeling doesn’t last very long.
“You have put gladness in my heart…” | Psalm 4:7
Take a second and re-read that. Jesus puts happiness within our very hearts. We don’t need a reason to experience it – the very fact that He is who He is, is enough!
It’s a new year, and a fresh start for so many of us. Imagine if we were to wake up every morning and say, “It’s going to be a good day, no matter what – as long as I have Jesus, I have everything I need!” I’m not saying that there won’t be mornings where you feel like a grumpy cat. But I am saying that training yourself to wake up with this kind of attitude will change you (and many around you!) to re-think about what joy really is and where it comes from.
Because Jesus Christ is the source of all joy. And rest assured, He ALWAYS wants you to have a good day! 🙂
