The pinky promise.
It’s one of the oldest, most familiar promise-sealing traditions in the world. Every school-aged kid has entered into a pinky swear covenant at some point in their short lives.
Rumor is, whoever breaks a pinky promise has to cut off their pinky finger. As expendable as the pinky finger is, no one wants that much pain or one less finger.
It’s no wonder that the pinky promise is supreme, sacred over all other promises. Nothing can top it. It is the most sacred form of promise-making and promise-keeping. Well, almost…
And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.’” This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. | Hebrews 7:20-22
I’m pretty sure God doesn’t make pinky promises. He doesn’t really have to. We pinky swear when we really mean business.
God always means business.
While we carelessly throw words around, God very carefully and intentionally speaks.
This passage from Hebrews (Hebrews 7:11-28) discusses priesthood under the Old Testament Law and describes Jesus Christ as our new, eternal High Priest who forever intercedes for us.
He is our “better hope…through which we draw near to God” (v.19).
While the priests of the Old Testament were chosen by lineage and tribal descent, Jesus became our forever priest when He died on the cross for our sins and rose again from the grave three days later. His “indestructible life” (v.16) and death’s inability to hold Him made this true. God the Father made this so when He said to the Lord Jesus,
The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” | Psalm 110:4
And because Jesus defeated death, because He lives forever, He is our “better hope,” He is the “guarantor of a better covenant.”
What is this better covenant? That those who believe in Christ as their Savior are guaranteed eternity with Him.
God didn’t pinky swear on this, but I don’t think He needed to. The blood of His Son, Jesus Christ, is our assurance. And there’s no breaking this promise.
So let’s rest joyfully in this truth! Let’s rejoice in knowing with full confidence that the Lord Jesus Christ is our eternal High Priest, who can and will and DOES intercede for us, now and always. Understand this:
God gave His word.
He won’t take it back.
Let this truth penetrate your heart, allowing you to place your confidence in Him for ALL things, in ALL situations, in ALL moments of life.
God didn’t pinky promise us eternal life, joy abounding, or freedom from sin. No, He swore it to us by the blood of His Son, Jesus. Now, it’s up to us to live lives that are worthy of this incredible demonstration of love undeserved. Make this your aim. Make this your life’s pursuit and you won’t be disappointed.
