So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. | 1 Corinthians 13:13

Most of us know this verse to be part of the “love chapter” of 1 Corinthians 13. It is such a pragmatic and useful chapter in terms of our relationships with others. As I’ve been mulling over this verse, I see how it gives a key in appreciating God’s Divine and Perfect Love for us, in us, and through us.

This speaks of an ultimate trust and leaning on what we believe. As Christ followers, we believe that God so loves us. When we build our lives on this unwavering truth (as opposed to having faith in politics, or an organization, or even too much faith in people) we are building it on the most solid foundation, because His love never fails. This is His love to us – drawing us to rest and worship.

We can have hope even in the most dire of situations because Christ Jesus lives in us and we get to see Him face to face. The hope of who Jesus is (and that He gets sweeter day-by-day to us who walk with Him) brings joy and expectancy to our days. This is His love in us – pushing us forward to look unto Jesus.

L O V E

In and of ourselves, love isn’t natural. It’s not easy to lay our own wants and wishes down for the sake of others. As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit living inside us, who enables us to love freely and fully. God has poured His love on us, so it ought to be a natural outflowing as a work of the Holy Spirit to love. This is His love through us – enabling us to love others and the Lord more and more.

Let us make it our aim to remember and worship the Lord for who He is, allowing Him to work in us and setting all else aside. Have faith, (trust Him), expectant hope (look forward to more and more of Jesus), and love (affection only begotten by the Holy Spirit working in us). It is His divine love that compels us and calls us to a life built on these three things…the greatest being love.

Fear not, my brothers and sisters. Walk in the light of the Lord Jesus and you will find faith, hope, and love to dispel all else.

  1. “The hope of who Jesus is…brings joy and expectancy to our days.” – YES! You stated it so perfectly, Sarah! Knowing Him more & more only stirs our hearts to be with Him more & more! ❤
