I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.  | John 10:11

To the Good Shepherd, each and every sheep is worth His life. He isn’t a hired hand, for a hired hand would cut and run at the first threat or sign of trouble. No, the Good Shepherd cares for the sheep.

He cares for me.

The Good Shepherd has steadfast love for me that is better than life itself!

King David was blessed beyond measure and exalted above Saul to take the throne as King over Israel. The Lord protected him, anointed him, guided him, and worked through him from when he was just a young boy. David served the Lord whole-heartedly, and the Lord promised to establish his throne forever! The steadfast love of the Lord was so great that David had no response other than:

“Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?” | 2 Samuel 7:18

Walking in step with the Heavenly Father, Kind David went on to be a reflection of His perfect love. David showed kindness to the house of Saul, the man who ruthlessly pursued him and attempted to kill him numerous times, by way of Mephibosheth, his grandson.

And Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, “Mephibosheth!” And he answered, “Behold, I am your servant.” And David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.” | 2 Samuel 9:6-7

And how did Mephibosheth respond? He responded to the love of King David, just as King David responded to the steadfast love of the Good Shepherd.

And he paid homage and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I?” | 2 Samuel 9:8

This is our interaction with the Lord: our Good Shepherd. He is the master and guide of many, but He knows each by name.

He is Shepherd of a lowly sheep such as I.
He is King of a dead dog such as I.
He is Friend of a sinner such as I.

He laid down His life for me, and now I sit at the King’s table always!

The Good Shepherd alone deserves all glory and praise!

Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. | Psalm 63:3

  1. Ahh, loved this post, Vinay! I often think about Mephibosheth & his response to King David’s grace, mercy, and love. It’s the same response I should have towards my King! In fact, I should respond with even GREATER humility & love, because I was saved & blessed in a much GREATER way than Mephibosheth – in a much GREATER way than King David could even hope to grant. Thankful for the love, mercy, forgiveness, and grace of our Savior & King! Thanks for sharing!
