Let’s just be honest with ourselves for a moment: We’ve all had our fair share of those days. You know what I’m talking about. The days you wake up feeling like you could go back to sleep for a month. The days you dread going into work or school because it means another entire draining day of the same thing you’ve been doing for ages.
I used to think I could conquer these days with adjusting my mindset alone. I told myself to “get up, dress up, show up and never give up” every day, and for a while, it totally worked. Pretty soon, though, my positive attitude fell flat. No matter how hard I tried to muster up the same kind of energy I was radiating before, my optimistic outlook on things was plunging head-first into the ground.
At a recent job interview, I was asked a personal question I’d never been asked by an employer before:
“Every one of us finds it tough to get out of bed and go to work somedays. On the days you find it tough to get going, what motivates you to press forward?”
I’ll tell you this much – even with all the interview preparation I had done leading up to that afternoon, I never expected them to ask me that! How would you have answered on the spot?
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow
Because He lives, all fear is gone
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living, just because He lives
— Bill Gaither
My life has purpose because Christ is alive and at work in me.
I’m able to get out of bed every day knowing that I’ve entrusted the next 24 hours to Someone who cares for me more than anyone else ever could. While some days are definitely harder than others, because of Christ, every day is considered a gift and another opportunity to live in a way that shows Him I’m thankful.
No matter how hard I try, I can’t predict what tomorrow will bring. Life can change so fast – a week from now I could find myself in a situation I never saw coming. Every once in a while, I find this an absolutely terrifying reality. However, I always come back to the same thought: I can sit here, and worry about something completely out of my control for the rest of life… Or, I can choose to have faith that the God who radically cares for me will take care of me until the end, no matter what happens.
And I choose the latter.
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. | 1 Peter 5:7
