Hymnist: Thomas Chisholm | Lyrics
I can’t tell you how many hundreds of times the lyrics to this song have come out of my lips. Growing up in the church, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” was a key hymn to be sung at any occasion, and especially on Sunday mornings. It’s amazing how I repeated these same words over and over again as a child, and yet never fully understood the truth they held until much, much later.
Recently, I read back over these lyrics, and came up with a list of truths they share about my God. Take a look for yourself:
- He is faithful.
- He does not change.
- He will never stop caring for me.
- All the beauty in nature, changing seasons, and celestial courses are perfect and orderly because He made them that way.
- He shows mercy and love.
- He pardons my sins.
- He brings me joy and peace.
- He guides me through life.
- He gives me the strength I need for today, and the hope I need for the uncertainties to come.
- He has blessed me with more than enough.
- Every day I see His blessings.
- Everything I need has been faithfully, graciously and abundantly given to me from Him.
The Lord’s loving kindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. | Lamentations 3: 22-23
For a while, I didn’t understand. I found myself asking God,
“Why? Why do You care so much? You know what I’ve done. You know the filth that I’ve carried with me, and how many times I’ve repeatedly hurt You over the course of my life. How could I expect You to still care about me even after everything I’ve done?”
So often, as we get caught up in the guilt of our sin and begin to feel that we don’t deserve the love of God, we forget how different He is from us.
God’s faithfulness is not dependent on what we do,
it’s a part of who He is!
Because of who He is, I can trust Him to help me find freedom from my sin and so much more. Suddenly, the uncertainties of life and the difficult times I have gone through have purpose. Instead of walking aimlessly through life, I am following the One who has authored my story from the very beginning.
“We often think of great faith as something that happens spontaneously so that we can be used for a miracle or healing. However, the greatest faith of all, and the most effective, is to live day by day trusting Him. It is trusting Him so much that we look at every problem as an opportunity to see His work in our life. It is not worrying, but rather trusting and abiding in the peace of God that will crush anything that Satan tries to do to us. If the Lord created the world out of chaos, He can easily deal with any problem that we have.” | Rick Joyner
Every new morning is an opportunity for us to thank God for the abundant blessings He has showered on us. Each new day is an opportunity to trust Him to finish His amazing work in our lives.
