He Who Calls You | Part 1

He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. | 1 Thessalonians 5:24

We recently celebrated my sister’s (“sister-in-law” for those of you who feel that distinction is necessary) bridal shower. It was a sweet time of fellowship and rejoicing in the Lord’s faithfulness in her and Mithin’s lives. We had many sisters from church present, as well as relatives and friends. For two hours, we made the bride sit on a high chair in the middle of the room as we all ate, prayed, played games, and teased her endlessly.

That morning, I shared a few thoughts on their “wedding verse” as an encouragement and reminder for us all. As I meditated on this verse, I realized what an important and necessary reminder it was for me, as someone who had already been married for a short time. And so, I am sharing it again here with my Come Awake family. My hope is twofold: That regardless of where you are in life, whether single, married, or widowed, you would be

  1. Reminded of God’s faithfulness to you and
  2. Encouraged to reflect that same faithfulness, which you have received to others

A few definitions to start us off:

  • Strict or thorough in the performance of duty
  • True to one’s word, promises, vows, etc.
  • Steady in allegiance or affection; loyal; constant
God is faithful. Perfectly faithful.

God is thorough in His performance of love, patience, forgiveness, and gentleness towards us. He does not leave us wanting. There are no gaps in His demonstration of these traits towards us.

God is true to the promises found in His Word. We can look back on our lives and SEE His faithfulness in countless situations—whether it was that He kept us from something or brought us to something, He connects all the dots of time and space in just the right way to bring about our greatest good and His greatest glory. We can look at our current situations and SEE His faithfulness here too. Our lives are surely far from perfect, but most of us have jobs, shelter, food, clothing, transportation, education opportunities, etc. But even if we don’t have any or all of those things, we have HIM. And honestly, He is ALL that we need. Looking ahead, we can trust that we will continue to SEE the Lord’s faithfulness because we have seen it in the past and in the present.

God is steady in His allegiance and affection towards us. His love is not based on our merit. Our sin and failures do not make Him love us any less. Our God is 100% reliable, available, and present, 100% of the time.

Indeed, God is faithful. And He has
surely done all that He has promised
and so much more.

As we consider the Lord’s faithfulness to us, let’s also be sure to assess our response to His faithfulness. Whether a spouse, a bride, a parent, an employer, an employee, a student—regardless of the roles and responsibilities we take on in this life, we must
