“Before I made you in your mother’s womb, I chose you. Before you were born, I set you apart for a special work. I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Then I said, “But Lord God, I don’t know how to speak. I am only a boy.”
But the Lord said to me, “Don’t say, ‘I am only a boy.’ You must go everywhere I send you, and you must say everything I tell you to say. Don’t be afraid of anyone, because I am with you to protect you,” says the Lord. | Jeremiah 1:5-8
God knew you before you ever thought about Him.
The Word of God tells us that He determined how He was going to use you for His glory before you ever even existed on Earth. This does not mean that He predetermines your every single step and action, but it does mean that God has bigger plans for your life than you even dreamed.
Looking at the life of Jeremiah, we see that God’s plan was that Jeremiah would warn a nation that was immersed in idolatry to turn back to God.
Just like many prophets who came before him—Noah, Abraham, Moses, Joshua, David—Jeremiah doesn’t see how God can use him to pull off such a daunting task. He reminds the Lord that he is only a child, he is afraid of how the people around him will react to what the Lord is calling him to do. He knows that calling out the nation’s sin is going to turn him into a despised individual, and so he offers an excuse—he says he’s too young for the task.
God dismisses this fear with assuring words:
Do not be afraid of anyone, for I will be with you to deliver you. This is the Lord’s declaration. | Jeremiah 1:8
We often underestimate what God can do in our lives. We put our trust in what seems practical—we trust people and doubt God. How would our lives look if we trusted God and doubted people?
We have to stop underestimating what God can do in our lives. He created each one of us with a purpose, He thought of us and created us intentionally. Everything about us is perfectly planned in order that we would have what we need to fulfill His plan for our lives.
