Ideal Image

So, funny story, I was checking my email and a promotion popped up that said, “Wrinkles are so 2018, Hellooo Botox.” It went on to say:

“Thanks to Botox, those fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead, frown lines and crow’s feet can be erased in no time. Let’s leave those lines behind, we’re here to help start your new year wrinkle free. Let’s make 2019 your most beautiful year yet.”

Pretty convincing, huh?

I couldn’t help but laugh. However, I felt like I was being sucked into an industry that wants to just nip and tuck all our insecurities away.

This was their version of an ideal image.

But what is ours?

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. | Psalm 139:14

God says we are beautiful.
We are made in his likeness

Believe me when I say I have my list of insecurities.

  • I want to be skinny and look more beautiful for my husband.
  • I don’t like my acne prone skin.
  • I wish my right ear wasn’t bigger than my left ear.
  • feel like I have a double chin.
  • The list could go on.

When I first got married, I wanted to follow all the trendy new looks. I wanted to highlight my hair and I wanted to get my ears pierced. When I went through with it, I asked myself: what was the purpose? Why did I think those things would make me look more beautiful? Why would I go up against God’s design?

I’m not saying those things are bad, but if you go forward with the intention of “it will make me look more beautiful,” then that ideal image is wrong.

God designed you in his image.
That is the epitome of beautiful

We are to reflect his ideal image.

Cover yourself in grace:

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. | 2 Corinthians 12:9

Cover yourself in faithfulness:

…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. | Philippians 1:6

Cover yourself in love:

But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. | Psalm 86:15

Cover yourself in prayer:

Therefore he is able to save completely, those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. | Hebrews 7:25

Life will throw an oddball of insecurities, but I want to encourage you that whenever you feel unloved, unimportant, and insecure, remember to whom you belong. Our God will go with you and sustain you.

Remember…

He chose you.
He wants you.
He appointed you.
He sees you where you are.
Celebrate who God made you to be.

  1. Brittany, This article is helpful for me to share with our girls group (few of Johanna’ age group girls meet at our home once a month or so). Recently we have been discussing about “My Identity”.
