My cousin sent me a link the other day of a clip from the Oprah show featuring, Nick Vujicic. Now, many of you may know of this 30-year-old man, but he was someone new for me and watching this video was such an inspiration to my life. Nick was born with no arms or legs and lives a life that, for many of us, seems impossible. For years Nick struggled with the fact that he was not “normal,” and at a young age attempted to commit suicide. The pain, the mockery, the feelings of worthlessness caught up to him and he felt that suicide was his only option. Can you imagine living a life like this? Can you imagine being tormented day after day over something you had no control over? I know for some of you, this story may hit home. Not because of his physical circumstances, but because of his feelings of depression and worthlessness. I write this post today to tell you that there’s hope and there is a bright future ahead of you through Jesus Christ.
Before Nick was presented on the Oprah show, Dr. Rick Warren was speaking about choices. As humans, God has given everyone the right to have free choice. We can choose what we want to eat today, where we will go for fun tomorrow, to accept our life circumstances, and most importantly – we have the choice to live wholeheartedly for God. For Nick, it eventually clicked that being angry or throwing himself a pity party was not going to magically make his arms and legs grow back. Instead, he accepted the life God gave him, and saw his situation through God’s eyes. Have you ever stopped to do that? When everything is going wrong in your life and you don’t know why you have so much bad luck, have you ever stopped to see your situation through God’s eyes? Or even stopped to think that God made me the way I am for a reason? This morning I was listening to a message from Tony Evans (I know, I know, I love listening to him), and he spoke on the story of Esther. I won’t repeat the story, but essentially, God used Esther’s beauty to get her into the King’s palace, and then used her position to deliver His own people – a group of people who were destined to die. God made Esther for this very purpose. To the world, her beauty and poise is what made her a Queen, but in reality, that was only a small part of God’s plan. Esther had to realize that her position was given to her for a reason, and in realizing this she was able to deliver her people.
Nick realized he could not change any of his physical characteristics, so instead of feeding into the lies of the devil that he was helpless or worthless, he chose to hear God’s voice and allow God to turn what could have been bad into something great. I explained Esther’s story above, because God used Esther’s beauty to get her into a high position. In the same way, God used Nick’s limbless body to put him into a position of favor. Nick has become an inspiration to many around the world, and I am sure through his testimony people have come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. How great is that?! God is able to use our life situations and turn it into something bigger and better, if we allow Him. Nick is thankful for the life that God gave him, and because of that God uses him for His own kingdom.
I don’t know the pain that many of you reading this may be going through, and I can’t answer why you have been put in certain situations. But what I do know that if you put your hope in God, He will use your life for His glory.
“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
All things work together for good! It doesn’t say that all perfect things work together for good – just ALL things! Meaning your messiest situation can be turned around by God and can work together for His good! For those of you struggling with a bad break up or a difficult relationship: look to God. What is He trying to teach you? You can choose to be sad or you can choose to learn from your situation and give control to God. You can let Him direct your paths so that you are no longer convinced by the schemes of the devil. Trust that God has only good in store for you!
Nick initially put his hope in his circumstances and his appearance, and this led him to a dark path of depression and almost suicide, but by the grace of God he changed his perspective and put his hope on things above.
“Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.”
“And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.”
1 John 3:3
He realized that God was in control of his life, and whatever was thrown his way, was ultimately under God’s control. He placed his hope in the One, True living God, and because of that he has freedom. He is no longer controlled by the schemes of the devil, but is controlled by the power of Jesus Christ. Turn what God has given you to Him and allow Him to use you for His Kingdom.
