Musicians: Kristy & Sarah Schiete
Hymnist: Frances R. Havergal | Lyrics
“This is what you’ll be singing,”
they told us, handing over the hymnal.
I stared at the black and white shapes, blurred by the tears that threatened to spill. My grandma had picked “Like A River Glorious” for us grandkids to sing at her funeral.
Sing at a funeral? I wasn’t so sure about it. We were all still worn out from the week, with my grandma having been in the hospital for days before she finally went on to meet her Savior. I remember feeling so numb, trying to comprehend that she was really gone.
“Lord, I don’t have the heart to sing,”
The day finally came, and we all gathered together at the front of the room. The pianist started playing the intro and my heart got stuck in my throat. But this song was for her, and so we sang. I’d heard that song so many times before, but it wasn’t till that day that the words really meant something to me.
Like a river glorious
Is God’s perfect peace,
Over all victorious
In its bright increase.
Perfect, yet it floweth
Fuller every day,
Perfect, yet it groweth
Deeper all the way.
Stayed upon Jehovah,
Hearts are fully blest,
Finding as He promised,
Perfect peace and rest.
P e a c e .
In spite of the grief and the aching hearts; there was peace. Peace in knowing that my grandma was no longer in pain. Peace in knowing that she was with her Savior and that I would get to see her again one day. Peace in knowing that even amidst our sorrows, the Lord was near. Peace that grows ever deeper and ever more true the closer we walk with the Lord.
What a difference it makes when our eyes are on Him,
and not on the trials and storms around us.
Every joy or trial
Falleth from above,
Traced upon our dial
By the Sun of Love.
We may trust Him fully
All for us to do,
They who trust Him wholly
Find Him wholly true.
My voice broke off after that verse, in an effort not to cry. “They who trust Him wholly, find Him wholly true.”
WHOLLY TRUE: completely, absolutely, perfectly.
Not partially, not a fraction. My grandma had witnessed that promise. She had lived it. No matter the situation, she had such joy in the Lord because she took Him at His word.
If we are faithless, He remains faithful – for He cannot deny Himself. | 2 Timothy 2:13
What a hope we have! What peace can be ours! I encourage you, to be “stayed upon Jehovah.” He will always be faithful, and He will never let you down.
